1... What is a Destination Wedding?
A destination wedding is when you travel to a special place for your wedding. It might be just the two of you (also known as eloping!), or you might include a group of friends and family. It's an appealing option if you want to do something different, organizing a small guest list, hold the wedding at a place equally (in)convenient for far-flung family, or just 'get away'!" Ten percent of weddings today are now considered "destination weddings". Scroll down for a list of popular destinations.
2... Do we bring guests along?
As mentioned above, guests are optional. Having guests in attendance will distinguish your "destination wedding" from a traditional elopement.
3... If I have a destination wedding, will any guests attend?
We have found that our wedding couples are surprised at the number of friends and family who are willing to travel to a destination wedding. Our travel agents can assist all of your wedding guests with their arrangements, and can book blocks of hotel rooms, and group transportation.
Are there certain people, such as close family or friends, without whom you would not have your wedding? If so, we suggest that you poll these guests to see if attending your Destination Wedding is feasible for them.
Here is a sample of an email that several of our engaged couples have sent to their guests prior to committing to having a Destination Wedding.
"As you know, we are in the process of planning our wedding. We are contemplating having a Destination Wedding in a tropical location.
As someone important to us, we want to get your opinion on whether you could attend, given the following "ballpark" information:
- It could be a 2- or 3-night travel package requiring either a Friday or a Monday (or both) off from work. Our projected dates are [...]
- Estimated travel expenses could start at around $750 per person, including airfare, hotel accommodations, transfers to and from the airport, and taxes.
We would love to have a Destination Wedding, but wanted to check in with our most important guests before making this decision, as we would love to share this important time in our lives with you. We are looking forward to hearing from you!"
4... Are destination weddings cheaper than a traditional one?
Even though you have to pay for transportation, shipping must-have items ahead of time and resort accommodation, chances are your destination wedding will still cost less than the $30,000 an average American couple spends on their nuptials.
With a smaller guest list and favorable exchange rates in many overseas locations, couples are able to spend less on food and reception locations, while receiving equal or better quality. Often, the couple is able to splurge on things they would not be able to afford 'back home', such as an open bar, unique and personalized favors or even extra opportunities, like a private tour of the area for all of the guests, or a morning-after brunch.
Formerly the exclusive domain of celebrities and the ultra-rich, Destination Weddings have in recent years become accessible to more and more couples looking to add an "exotic twist" to their special ceremony. Properly planned, a destination wedding can not only save you upwards of $20,000 off the cost of a traditional wedding, it can also turn your wedding day into an unforgettable "mini-vacation" for you and your guests.
5... How far in advance should I plan my destination wedding?
This really varies with the destination. One major factor is how many guests are going to be invited. For a traditional wedding a month or two is acceptable notice for "Save the Date" invitations. Destination Weddings however involve travel arrangements, and invitations should therefore be sent out at least 4-6 months in advance. This is to allow the guests to properly budget and plan for the trip, and to make sure that they are able to obtain reservations.
6... How do I get my wedding dress there safely?
If you are flying, you can usually make arrangements with your airline in advance. First-class cabins have large "coat closets" that can be used for bridal gown storage. If your plane does not have a first-class area (on airlines such as Southwest), it is highly recommended that you package the dress in a large box and ship it to your destination in advance, carefully packed in tissue to hold its shape. Regardless of the method you choose, look into having your gown pressed at a local cleaners upon your arrival. Your hotel's concierge and/or wedding coordinator can help with this.
7... Who writes the wedding vows? Can I supply them?
Our staff of wedding professionals has prepared hundreds of different vow programs. One of our professionals will gladly assist you with writing your own vows and/or help you choose from our list.
8... Is music supplied during the ceremony? What about the reception?
We supply recorded processional and recessional music. You are more than welcome to bring your own music in CD format. Our coordinators can work your music into the wedding program at your request. Or consider arranging live music for your ceremony and reception.
9... Will there be flowers at the ceremony?
We offer a wide variety of flower packages. Speak to one of our helpful representatives and they can help you choose the right floral package for your wedding.
10... Do I need any immunizations before traveling to Argentina?
The World Health Organization does not recommend any immunizations for traveling to Argentina.
11... Can I bring dollars?
The currency is the Argentine peso but most stores accept dollars. Dollars can be exchanged at foreign exchange houses and at the Hotel.
